Being a Single Mother and the Journey that Never Ends

What is it Like to be a Single Mother and Will I Need Help?

What is it like to be a single mother? Be prepared for the most joyous, frightening and life-fulfilling journey you’ll ever experience.  Being a single mother is the journey that never ends.

Being a single mother is a journey that designs life.  What is it like to be a single mother? You will be run ragged to the edge of despair in your pursuit to raise the budding personality that inspires you, strengthens you and gives you an incomprehensible meaning to your life.  You will grow from nurse to teacher to inspirer, and become your child’s confidant and friend for life.

Being a single mother is the most rewarding journey on earth, and many single mothers will explore the journey. The American Journal of Community Psychology reported in the 1990’s that 60% of the children born since 1984 are likely to be in single parent homes for at least five years of their life.  In 2005, the Census Bureau reported children represent about 25% of the population, and single parent households portray a similar statistic.  Single Parents, the majority of them single mothers, represent almost 1/4th of the families in the United States.  Being a single mother does not mean you have to do it alone. But it takes work.

What is it Like to be a Single Mother Working Full-Time or Going to School Full-Time?

Women experiencing the enchantment of single mother pregnancy account for nearly 35% of the nation’s population.  Contrary to popular belief, the majority of single mothers work full-time.  A 2007 Child Support Report reported half the single parents worked full-time, and almost 30% work part-time.  Only 6% of single mother are reported as being recipients of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), a program from single mother and welfare reform policies.  What is it like to be a single mother on TANF?  Hard. These are often single teen mothers, experiencing the disadvantages of being a single teen mother without an income or the education necessary for employment.  Finding financial aid for single mothers can pull you out.

Science Daily reports that single mothers with children under five is the fastest growing segment of the labor market.  What is it like to be a single mother working full-time or part-time with a child under five?  Your morning will be exhausting and challenging. Your suit will always have a stain.  You will laugh with other single mothers at work agreeing that work is a break from motherhood. Your adrenaline will flow as you rush to make dinner and spend quality time with your children.  The majority of single parents read to their children, and they spend almost the same amount of time with their children as married mothers do.  You will fall asleep with your child while reading. Being a single mother means you won’t have to worry about a husband waking you up.

What is it Like to be a Single Mother without a Father in the Child’s Life?

Being a single mother without the biological father in the child’s life does have advantages.  You alone establish the morals, values and ideals to instill in your child. You will design life.  You’ll never have to worry about your single mother rights during a custody battle.  2008 studies have also shown that the effect of a single mother home on a male is no different than being married if there is a positive male influence.  Old theories are being washed away with new evidence.  Being a single mother also means you should reach out for single mother help and single mother support when you need it. Being a single mother is not a solitaire sport.

What is it like being a single mother? Being a single mother will show you the meaning of life.
